In UP, to pick a DGP is a cumbersome task. Presently 5 IPS officers from 1991 batch have a strong claim to the post. They are- Alok Sharma, DG, SPG, Piyush Anand, DG, NDRF, Rajeev Krishna, DG, Vigilance, UP, Abhay Kumar Prasad, DG, Civil Defence, UP and Prem Chand Meena, DG, Police Housing Corporation UP. Among them, Prasad is scheduled to retire this year in November while Sharma will retire next year in June. Anand is due to retire in June 2028 and Meena in December 2027. Rajeev Krishna is the only IPS officer who will retire in June 2029. Given the chance, Krishna will be the DGP for four years. Such a long tenure may not suit any government.
